If your child is being assessed for gifted placement, a learning disability, or general cognitive profiling, you may be asked — or offered a choice — between the WISC-V and the Stanford-Binet 5 (SB5). Both are individually administered IQ tests requiring a licensed psychologist, both use a mean-100 / SD-15 scoring scale, and both are widely accepted by gifted programs and clinical evaluators. The differences between them are real, however, and understanding those differences can help you make a more informed decision.

When the WISC-V Is the Better Choice
The WISC-V is the appropriate first choice in most school-age gifted identification situations for the following reasons:
- Near-universal acceptance: Virtually all district gifted programs, private schools, and neuropsychological evaluations accept WISC-V results. A minority of districts specify WISC-V exclusively.
- Processing speed data: The PSI provides critical information about ADHD, learning disability profiles, and twice-exceptional identification — information the SB5 doesn't generate as directly.
- Learning disability evaluation: The WISC-V's working memory and processing speed components, combined with the ability discrepancy analysis its five-index structure enables, make it the standard instrument for LD assessment in school settings.
- Most updated norms for school-age children: WISC-V norms (2014) are more recent than SB5 norms (2003), which matters because IQ scores are corrected for the normative sample's age at time of testing.
- Twice-exceptional profiles: The GAI (General Ability Index) is well-established in the WISC-V and widely recognized by gifted programs as an appropriate alternative composite for 2e students.
When the Stanford-Binet 5 Is the Better Choice
There are several situations where the SB5 is a meaningfully better fit:
- Very young children (ages 2–5): The WISC-V starts at age 6. For preschool-age children, the SB5 (or WPPSI-IV) is the appropriate instrument. The SB5's lowest-level items use pictures and object manipulation appropriate for toddlers.
- Profoundly gifted assessment: The SB5's higher score ceiling — especially at the extreme upper end — makes it the preferred tool when a child appears to be performing at the ceiling of the WISC-V even with Extended Norms. Programs like Davidson Young Scholars and Mensa often see SB5 scores reported for their most profoundly gifted applicants.
- Verbal vs nonverbal ability comparison: The SB5 generates separate Verbal IQ and Nonverbal IQ composites, which some evaluators find more clinically useful for understanding the verbal/spatial split in a child's profile.
- English language learners: The SB5's Nonverbal IQ composite is a strong measure of cognitive ability for children whose English proficiency may underestimate their intellectual capacity on heavily verbal tests.
- Lifespan research contexts: Because the SB5 is normed from age 2 to 85+, it's the instrument of choice when comparing cognitive ability across developmental stages or when re-evaluating an individual from childhood into adulthood with a consistent scale.
How Scores Compare Between the Two Tests
Research studies comparing the WISC-V and SB5 in the same individuals typically find a correlation of approximately 0.80–0.87 between FSIQ scores — high enough to confirm they're measuring similar constructs, but low enough to make clear that the scores are not interchangeable.
In practice, the same child often receives somewhat different FSIQ scores on the two instruments. Several factors drive this:
- Norm age: Because SB5 norms are from 2003 and WISC-V norms are from 2014, the Flynn Effect (the secular rise in IQ scores over time) may cause WISC-V scores to be slightly lower for the same underlying ability — simply because the more recent normative sample performed better overall.
- Test content differences: The WISC-V places more emphasis on processing speed; the SB5 places more emphasis on quantitative reasoning. A child who is very strong at quantitative reasoning but slow-processing may score higher on the SB5.
- Ceiling effects: At the very high end (130+), the WISC-V standard scale can underestimate a child's true ability because fewer challenging items are available at those levels. The SB5's higher ceiling means scores above 145 tend to be more reliable on the SB5.
Bottom line on score comparability: Do not assume a score of 135 on one test is equivalent to 135 on the other. If a child's gifted program requires a specific score and they are close to the cutoff, the choice of instrument can matter. Ask your evaluating psychologist which test is most appropriate given your child's profile and the program's requirements.
Which Test Does Your District or Program Accept?
Most programs accept either instrument — but not all. Before scheduling an evaluation, contact the gifted coordinator or admissions office and ask:
- "Do you accept both the WISC-V and the Stanford-Binet 5?"
- "Is there a preferred instrument or one that you require?"
- "Do you accept scores from private evaluations, or only district-administered assessments?"
- "Is there a minimum recency requirement for scores?" (most programs require scores within 3 years)
If you're applying to multiple programs simultaneously, choose the instrument with the broadest acceptance — which is typically the WISC-V — unless there is a specific clinical reason to use the SB5 (very young child, profoundly gifted ceiling concerns, nonverbal assessment need).
