What "90th percentile" means for MAP: A student scoring at the 90th percentile in math is scoring as high as or higher than 90% of students nationwide in the same grade. This is typically the threshold used for advanced math placement and, in many districts, for gifted program identification based on MAP scores.
Growth matters as much as the score itself. NWEA publishes expected growth norms — the average RIT gain from fall to spring for each grade level. A student who grows more than expected (in reading or math) is accelerating. A student who grows less than expected is falling behind in relative terms, even if their absolute score went up. Ask your child's teacher for their growth projection alongside their actual score.
Context
Parents sometimes confuse the MAP with cognitive ability tests like the CogAT or NNAT. They measure very different things and serve different purposes.
Many districts use MAP scores as a first-pass filter for gifted identification because MAP is already administered to all students. A child who scores in the 90th percentile or above in reading and math is often flagged for further gifted screening — which may then involve the CogAT or another cognitive ability test. So MAP can be the entry point to the gifted pipeline even though it is not a gifted test itself.
This is why preparing for MAP still matters even if your district uses a different tool for formal gifted identification. Strong MAP scores open doors to accelerated courses, advanced programs, and gifted screening — outcomes that compound over a student's academic career.

No amount of test-specific practice outperforms consistent wide reading over months.
