When your child's WISC-V score report arrives, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. The document typically includes a Full Scale IQ, five index scores, ten or more subtest scaled scores, percentile ranks, confidence intervals, and sometimes additional composite scores. This guide explains every major number — what it measures, what range it falls in, and what it means for your child's school placement or support needs.
The FSIQ: Mean of 100, Standard Deviation of 15
The Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) is the primary summary score on the WISC-V. It's calculated from seven core subtests spanning all five cognitive domains and is expressed on a scale where 100 is exactly average and the standard deviation is 15. This means roughly 68% of all children score between 85 and 115, and about 95% score between 70 and 130.
The FSIQ is a standardized score based on a nationally representative normative sample — your child's score tells you how they performed relative to other children the same age across the country, not relative to their classmates or siblings.

A child with a VCI of 138, FRI of 132, WMI of 91, and PSI of 88 might produce an FSIQ in the 115–120 range. That composite tells only part of the story. The exceptional verbal and fluid reasoning abilities are pulled down by average-to-low working memory and processing speed. This profile is a classic marker of a twice-exceptional learner — gifted in some domains, with significant processing differences in others.
When scatter exceeds roughly 23 points between the highest and lowest index scores, many psychologists recommend reporting supplementary composite scores (like the General Ability Index) alongside or instead of the FSIQ, because the composite is not a meaningful representation of any single facet of ability.
Gifted Thresholds: What Score Is Actually Required
The most common gifted identification cutoff using the WISC-V is FSIQ 130, which corresponds to the 98th percentile. This is the threshold used by most state gifted education programs, many private gifted schools, and programs like Johns Hopkins CTY.
However, a significant minority of programs use lower thresholds:

Pearson has published Extended Norms for the WISC-V specifically to address this. The critical implication: a twice-exceptional child's FSIQ is artificially deflated by their processing weaknesses. Many gifted programs and advocates argue that the General Ability Index (GAI) — which includes only VCI, VSI, and FRI, excluding the working memory and processing speed subtests — is a more accurate measure of these children's intellectual capacity. If you suspect your child is twice-exceptional, request that the psychologist report the GAI alongside the FSIQ and discuss whether the program you're applying to accepts GAI for gifted qualification.
How to Read the Confidence Interval on the Score Report
Every WISC-V score is reported alongside a confidence interval — typically expressed as a 95% confidence interval. You'll see something like "FSIQ: 127 (120–132)." This means the evaluating psychologist is 95% confident that your child's "true" score falls somewhere between 120 and 132.
Why does this matter practically? If your target program has an FSIQ cutoff of 130 and your child scored 127, the confidence interval tells you that a score of 130+ is plausible — your child's true ability may exceed the obtained score. Some psychologists and advocates will note this when writing reports, and some programs will consider whether a score is "within the confidence interval" of their cutoff. It also means a score of 133 doesn't definitively place a child above 130 — the interval might overlap with 129 at the low end. Scores should always be interpreted as estimates within a range, not as precise points.

The GAI is a supplementary composite that includes only the Verbal Comprehension, Visual Spatial, and Fluid Reasoning subtests — the three "higher-order" cognitive domains.
