Our Mission

Every child deserves a fair shot at the test.

Test prep has always been expensive — private tutors, prep books, paid platforms. OpenKidsPrep exists to change that. Every resource on this site is free, forever, with no account required.

Why we built this

When a child takes a gifted screening like the CogAT or NNAT, the results carry real consequences — placement into accelerated programs, access to specialized schools, and opportunities that echo for years. Yet the preparation gap between families who can afford tutoring and those who cannot is enormous.

A single session with a test prep tutor can cost $150–$300. Publisher-approved practice books run $30–$60 apiece. Online platforms charge $20–$80 per month. For many families, these costs are simply out of reach.

OpenKidsPrep is our answer to that gap. We cover 15 standardized tests — from gifted and IQ assessments to private school admissions exams — with study guides, practice questions, skill-based skill boosters, and articles written in plain language that any parent can follow.

We keep the lights on through advertising. That trade-off lets us keep all content completely free without collecting your data or putting anything behind a paywall.

Who We Are

The OpenKidsPrep Editorial Team

The OpenKidsPrep Editorial Team creates and reviews all content on this site with input from K–8 educators, gifted program coordinators, and parents who have personally navigated the gifted testing process with their own children. Our team has direct experience with the tests we cover — including how questions are structured, what distinguishes a strong answer from a weak one, and the strategies that actually help children perform on test day.

Every practice question on OpenKidsPrep is written against the published specifications for the relevant test — section timing, difficulty distribution, question format, and answer structure. We do not simplify questions to make them easier. We do not make them harder than necessary to appear rigorous. Our goal is an accurate simulation of what a child will encounter in an actual testing session.

Content is reviewed for accuracy before publication and updated when tests change format or publishers update their official materials. If you spot an error, we fix it within 24 hours — contact us at our contact page.

Our editorial standards

How we research, write, verify, and update content on OpenKidsPrep.

📋

How questions are written

Each practice question is written against published test specifications: the official question type, difficulty range, time constraints, and answer format for that test and grade level. Questions are not adapted from other tests or simplified for convenience.

How content is verified

Study guide content — including score ranges, test structure, and preparation strategies — is cross-referenced against official publisher documentation, independent research studies, and reports from parents who have recently gone through the testing process.

🔄

How we stay current

We review all test pages annually and update them when publishers release new test forms, change scoring methods, or revise grade-level specifications. Articles include a "last reviewed" date so you always know how recent the information is.

✏️

Corrections policy

Errors are corrected within 24 hours of being reported. If you find a mistake in a question, explanation, score table, or any other content, please use our contact form — corrections take priority over all other work.

What we do not do

We do not accept sponsored content, paid placement, or advertiser influence over editorial decisions. We do not publish content without review. We do not make claims about score improvement that we cannot substantiate with evidence.
