Achievement Test Grades K–12

ITBS Study Guide

The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), now called Iowa Assessments, is one of the oldest and most respected standardized achievement tests in the U.S., developed at the University of Iowa. It measures achievement across reading, language arts, and math — with optional science and social studies batteries. Used by many districts for gifted identification and program placement, with scores reported as National Percentile Ranks (NPR).

ITBS Battery Breakdown

Detailed subtest descriptions for each of the three Core Composite batteries.

Reading Battery2 subtests · 33%

1. Vocabulary (~13%)

Multiple-choice questions testing word meaning in context. Students select the word or phrase closest in meaning to the underlined word.

  • Word meaning in context (most common format)
  • Synonyms and word relationships
  • Academic vocabulary across content areas

2. Reading Comprehension (~20%)

Fiction and nonfiction passages followed by multiple-choice questions. Tests literal comprehension, inference, main idea, and author's purpose.

  • Identifying main idea and key supporting details
  • Making inferences beyond what is stated
  • Author's purpose and point of view

Tip:

Read the questions before the passage. This helps you read with purpose and find answers faster.

Language Battery3 subtests · 33%

1. Spelling (~11%)

Identify the misspelled word in a group of words. Tests mastery of spelling rules and patterns for grade-appropriate vocabulary.

  • Common spelling patterns (ie/ei, double consonants)
  • Prefixes and suffixes added to base words
  • Homophones and commonly confused words

2. Capitalization & Punctuation (~11%)

Identify errors in capitalization and punctuation within sentences and passages.

  • Proper nouns, titles, beginning of sentences
  • Commas, semicolons, apostrophes, colons
  • End punctuation and quotation marks

3. Usage & Expression (~11%)

Grammar, sentence structure, and writing style. Identify the best way to revise an underlined portion of a sentence or paragraph.

  • Subject-verb agreement and pronoun agreement
  • Sentence combining and parallel structure
  • Word choice and concise expression
Mathematics Battery2 subtests · 33%

1. Math Concepts & Problem Solving (~17%)

Word problems and applied math requiring reasoning, estimation, and mathematical thinking. Not pure computation.

  • Multi-step word problems with real-world context
  • Number sense, patterns, and mathematical relationships
  • Geometry, measurement, and data interpretation

2. Math Computation (~16%)

Arithmetic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division — with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

  • Multi-digit operations with whole numbers
  • Fractions and decimals (upper grades)
  • Mental math and estimation strategies

Score Interpretation

Understanding ITBS Scores

ITBS scores are reported in three ways — NPR is most important for gifted identification.

National Percentile Rank (NPR)

Compared to a national norm group. NPR 90 = scored higher than 90% of same-grade peers. Most districts use NPR 90+ on the Core Composite as the gifted threshold for ITBS-based programs.

Grade Equivalent (GE)

A GE of 5.4 means performance like an average 5th grader in the 4th month. Important caveat: GE does NOT mean grade-level placement — a 3rd grader with GE 5.4 is not necessarily ready for 5th grade material.

Standard Score

A continuous scale used internally to measure growth across years. Less visible to parents but used by schools to track year-over-year improvement across grade levels.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ITBS?

The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), now known as Iowa Assessments, is a standardized achievement test published by Riverside Publishing (University of Iowa). It measures academic achievement in Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics for grades K–12.

What is a good ITBS score for gifted programs?

Most districts using ITBS for gifted identification require a National Percentile Rank (NPR) of 90th or higher on the Core Composite. Some programs require the 95th or 97th percentile. Always check your specific district's requirements.

What is a Grade Equivalent score?

A Grade Equivalent (GE) shows performance relative to typical students at a given grade level. A GE of 5.4 means your child performs like an average student in the 4th month of 5th grade. Important: GE does not indicate appropriate grade placement — it's a comparison tool only.

How is ITBS different from MAP?

Both test academic achievement, but MAP (NWEA) is adaptive and computer-based while ITBS is traditionally paper-based with fixed questions by grade level. MAP reports a RIT score; ITBS reports NPR and GE. MAP is more widely used for ongoing progress monitoring; ITBS is often used for annual achievement benchmarking.

Do all states use the ITBS?

No. ITBS is used by specific districts and private schools that choose to administer it — it is not mandated statewide in most states. It is common in Midwestern states and in private/independent schools nationwide. Check with your school district to confirm which test they use.
