What i-Ready Covers

i-Ready assesses two core subjects adaptively. Understanding each area helps you interpret your child's placement report and target specific skills.

Reading Diagnostic

Tests phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension across literary and informational texts. The adaptive engine adjusts difficulty in real time — a student who answers correctly gets harder questions, and vice versa.

Math Diagnostic

Covers number and operations, algebra and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry. Like the reading diagnostic, it adapts to your child's exact level — not their grade level.

Growth Tracking

i-Ready re-tests students in fall and spring to measure growth. Districts set 'typical growth' benchmarks by grade. Parents can request the full diagnostic report — it shows exactly which skills need work.

Understand it's diagnostic, not a grade

i-Ready is designed to feel challenging — that's intentional. If your child says it was hard, that's actually a sign the adaptive engine is working. Don't measure success by difficulty alone.

Parents can request the full diagnostic placement report from the teacher. It breaks down performance by domain (e.g., phonics, number operations) not just a single score.

Phonics questions appear at the lower grade levels of i-Ready Reading. If your child's diagnostic places them in phonics-level questions, the instructional priority is explicit phonics practice: letter-sound relationships, blends, digraphs, and vowel patterns. The i-Ready lessons themselves provide this instruction when schools have assigned them.

Reading – ComprehensionAfter reading a paragraph about recycling: "What is the main idea of this paragraph?" Show answer ▾

i-Ready Reading comprehension spans literal recall, inference, main idea, vocabulary in context, and author's purpose. The format mirrors state assessments. Daily independent reading at an appropriate challenge level is the single most effective preparation for this domain.

Fraction division is a key skill assessed in i-Ready Math around grades 5-6. The diagnostic places students by skill level, not grade — a 4th grader who is advanced may see 6th-grade fraction operations. The keep-change-flip method is reliable once students understand why it works.

i-Ready introduces algebraic thinking progressively. Variables and equations typically appear in Levels 4-5 (grades 4-5 approximate difficulty). The i-Ready scale score and placement level your child receives tells you exactly which domain to prioritize in preparation.

Math – GeometryA triangle has angles measuring 45° and 90°. What is the third angle? Show answer ▾

✓ 45° (angles in a triangle sum to 180°)

180 − 45 − 90 = 45. Geometry questions on i-Ready test properties of shapes, angle relationships, area, perimeter, and the coordinate plane. These concepts begin appearing around Level 4 and become more complex through Level 8.

Score Guide

Understanding i-Ready Scores and Placement Levels

i-Ready reports a scale score and places students in one of eight levels (Levels K–8 roughly correspond to kindergarten through grade 8 difficulty). The scale score is absolute — it does not fluctuate with grade norms.

What placement levels mean

A student at Level 4 in math is performing at approximately a 4th-grade level regardless of their actual grade. A 6th grader at Level 4 is two levels behind; a 3rd grader at Level 4 is one level ahead. Ask your child's teacher for expected growth targets at the start of the year — a student who meets or exceeds their target is on track even if their absolute level is below grade.

Focus preparation on the specific skill domains flagged in your child's most recent diagnostic report. Those are the areas where targeted practice produces the highest i-Ready score gains. There is no format memorization needed — the adaptive engine will find your child's actual level regardless.
