The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales is one of the oldest continuously used IQ tests in the world. The original Binet-Simon scale was developed in France in 1905 by Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon to identify students who needed additional educational support. It was adapted for American use at Stanford University in 1916 by Lewis Terman, who coined the term "Intelligence Quotient" (IQ).
The test has been revised multiple times — the most recent version, the Fifth Edition (SB5), was published in 2003 by psychologist Gale Roid and remains in active clinical use today. Despite its age and many revisions, the core purpose remains the same: to measure a range of cognitive abilities through structured, individually administered tasks.
The SB5 is published by Riverside Assessments. It covers ages 2 through 90+ and is one of the few IQ tests with a lifespan norm sample — making it useful for children as young as 2 and for adult testing as well.
Both are individually administered IQ tests by licensed psychologists — that is the most important similarity. But there are key structural differences:
- Age range: The SB5 covers ages 2–90+. The WISC-V only covers ages 6–16.
- Factor structure: The SB5 produces five factor scores (Fluid Reasoning, Knowledge, Quantitative Reasoning, Visual-Spatial, Working Memory) plus Nonverbal IQ and Verbal IQ. The WISC-V produces five index scores (VCI, VSI, FRI, WMI, PSI) but no dedicated NVIQ or VIQ.
- Processing Speed: The WISC-V measures processing speed (a timed clerical speed measure); the SB5 does not have an equivalent index.
- Ceiling: The SB5 has Extended Norms that extend above the standard score ceiling. The WISC-V's practical ceiling is approximately 155–160 FSIQ.
- School use: The WISC-V is more commonly administered in school settings and is the default for many districts' gifted evaluation processes.

The Stanford-Binet 5 is normed from age 2 years 0 months through adulthood (90+ years). This makes it one of the only major comprehensive IQ tests that can be administered to children as young as 2.
For preschool-age gifted identification (ages 2–5), the SB5 is one of the primary options, since the WISC-V only begins at age 6. The WPPSI-IV (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence) is another common option for ages 2.5–7, and clinicians sometimes choose between these based on the specific referral question.
For school-age children (ages 6–16), the SB5 and WISC-V overlap. The decision between them depends on the referral question, the program's requirements, and the child's expected score range.
The SB5 is also used for adult assessment and with older populations, which is unusual for an instrument originally designed for child assessment.
There is no single universal gifted cutoff — it varies by program and jurisdiction. The most common thresholds are:
- FSIQ 130+ (98th percentile): The conventional gifted threshold used by most school-based gifted programs in the United States. The SB5 classification system labels this range "Very Superior."
- FSIQ 145+ (99.9th percentile): Used by many talent search programs, highly selective gifted schools, and programs specifically designed for highly gifted students. The SB5 labels 145+ as "Highly Advanced."
- FSIQ 160+: Informally called "exceptionally" or "profoundly" gifted. At this level, the SB5's Extended Norms become particularly important for accurate measurement.
Some programs use factor scores rather than FSIQ — for example, a math-intensive program might qualify a student based on their Quantitative Reasoning score alone, even if their FSIQ is below the general gifted threshold.
Always check the specific requirements of the program you're applying to before assuming what score is needed.
You should not and cannot prepare a child for the SB5 by exposing them to actual test items. The SB5 is a standardized psychological instrument — its validity depends on the child encountering its items fresh. Exposing children to real SB5 items in advance is an ethical violation and can result in scores that don't reflect a child's true ability.
What you can appropriately do:
- Read broadly with your child to build vocabulary and world knowledge (relevant to the Knowledge factor)
- Engage in building toys, puzzles, and spatial activities (relevant to Visual-Spatial Processing)
- Practice mental math and number sense activities (relevant to Quantitative Reasoning)
- Play memory and attention games (relevant to Working Memory)
- Most importantly: ensure good sleep before the evaluation, a solid breakfast, and a calm, low-pressure framing of what the "puzzle session" is about
General cognitive enrichment through normal childhood activities is always appropriate. Drilling specific test formats is not.
The SB5 alone takes approximately 45–90 minutes, depending on the child's age and ability level:
- Young children (ages 2–5): Typically 45–60 minutes, with the psychologist building in breaks as needed. The evaluation can be split across two sessions if needed.
- School-age children (ages 6–16): Typically 60–90 minutes for the full battery.
- Highly gifted children: May take longer if the psychologist administers Extended Norm items to capture scores above the standard ceiling.
If your child is having a comprehensive evaluation that includes achievement testing, behavioral measures, or other instruments in addition to the SB5, the full evaluation may be spread across multiple sessions totaling 3–6+ hours of face-to-face time.
After the testing session, allow 2–4 weeks for the psychologist to score the assessment, write the full report, and schedule a feedback session.
The SB5 measures five cognitive abilities, each represented by a factor score with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15. Each factor is measured by one nonverbal subtest and one verbal subtest:
- Fluid Reasoning (FR): The ability to solve novel problems using logic and pattern recognition, independent of prior knowledge. Often considered the closest measure of "raw" intellectual ability.
- Knowledge (KN): Accumulated verbal and world knowledge — vocabulary, general information, and verbal comprehension developed through experience and education.
- Quantitative Reasoning (QR): Numerical and mathematical reasoning — not just arithmetic, but the ability to think logically about quantities and mathematical relationships.
- Visual-Spatial Processing (VS): The ability to perceive, analyze, and mentally manipulate visual and spatial information. Strong VS scores are often associated with success in engineering, architecture, and the visual arts.
- Working Memory (WM): The capacity to hold information in short-term memory while simultaneously using it — essential for all complex cognitive tasks.
The five nonverbal factor scores combine to form the Nonverbal IQ (NVIQ); the five verbal factor scores combine to form the Verbal IQ (VIQ). Both NVIQ and VIQ feed into the overall FSIQ.
This is a common outcome, and it does not mean one test is wrong or that your child "got lucky" on the SB5. The two tests are strongly correlated (approximately r = 0.85) but measure overlapping, not identical, sets of cognitive abilities.
A 7-point difference between instruments is completely within the expected range of variation. Several factors explain the gap:
- The SB5 and WISC-V have different factor structures — the SB5 includes Quantitative Reasoning as a dedicated factor while the WISC-V includes Processing Speed, which contributes to WISC-V FSIQ but not SB5 FSIQ
- Children who are strong in quantitative reasoning may score higher on the SB5 than the WISC-V
- Children whose speed of processing is relatively lower (but whose conceptual ability is high) may score higher on the SB5, which doesn't penalize for speed
For program purposes, use whichever score was produced by the instrument the program accepts. Both scores are valid reflections of your child's ability on that particular test on that particular day.
The SB5 can identify gifted ability in twice-exceptional (2e) children — those who have both exceptional cognitive strengths and a co-occurring learning difference (such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum, or a processing disorder). The SB5's factor score structure can reveal significant discrepancies between cognitive domains that may suggest a learning profile worth investigating.
However, the SB5 was not designed specifically as a learning disability assessment battery. A comprehensive evaluation for a child suspected of being twice-exceptional typically includes:
- An IQ test (SB5 or WISC-V)
- Academic achievement testing (e.g., WJ-IV Achievement, WIAT-III)
- Processing measures (e.g., phonological processing, rapid naming)
- Behavioral and adaptive rating scales
- Clinical interview and developmental history
The WISC-V is often preferred over the SB5 for 2e evaluations because it has more published research linking specific score patterns to LD diagnoses. However, if a 2e child is also highly gifted, the SB5's higher ceiling may be needed to accurately characterize their abilities even within the same evaluation.
Not every licensed psychologist administers the SB5 — many are trained primarily on the WISC-V. To find an evaluator who can administer the Stanford-Binet:
- Search for "gifted assessment psychologist" or "pediatric neuropsychologist" in your area
- Call and ask explicitly: "Do you administer the Stanford-Binet 5?" and "Are you trained in Extended Norms for highly gifted children?" (if relevant)
- Check the Davidson Institute's resources page for referral lists of gifted-specialized psychologists
- Contact SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) for referral guidance
- Ask your child's pediatrician or school psychologist for a referral to a private practice that specializes in gifted assessment
When you call a prospective evaluator, ask about their experience with gifted children specifically — not just whether they administer the SB5. Psychologists who regularly work with gifted populations understand the clinical nuances of interpreting a highly gifted profile and can provide more useful recommendations in the report.
Expect to pay $600–$2,500 for a private evaluation depending on your region and the scope of the assessment. Some insurance plans cover psychological evaluation when there is a clinical diagnosis being pursued, but typically not for gifted identification alone.
