When a school psychologist or pediatrician gives your child the KBIT-2 (Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, Second Edition), you'll receive a score report with up to three numbers. This guide walks through exactly what each score means, how they relate to each other, what the classification ranges indicate, and what to do with the result.
What the KBIT-2 Produces: Three Scores
The KBIT-2 yields three scores, not one. Understanding all three is essential to reading your child's report accurately.
- Verbal score — measures crystallized ability: the knowledge and vocabulary your child has acquired through language and experience. It includes two subtests: Verbal Knowledge (selecting pictures that match a word or concept) and Riddles (identifying a word that fits a set of clues). This is largely what people think of as "book smarts."
- Nonverbal score — measures fluid reasoning: the ability to recognize patterns and solve novel problems without relying on language. The subtest is Matrices, where the child selects the picture that completes a visual pattern. This score is considered language-fair and less dependent on vocabulary or prior knowledge.
- IQ Composite score — a weighted combination of Verbal and Nonverbal performance. This is the summary score most often referenced for gifted screening, placement, and interpretation.
All three scores are expressed on the same scale: a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. This is the same scale used by the WISC-V, Stanford-Binet 5, and most modern IQ tests, which makes comparison more intuitive.
Score Classification Bands
The KBIT-2 uses standard score classification bands identical to most individually administered intelligence tests. Here is how the IQ Composite (and the Verbal and Nonverbal scores) are typically categorized:

A score of 100 is precisely average for the child's age group. About two-thirds of all children score between 85 and 115 — one standard deviation in either direction from the mean.
What Makes KBIT-2 Different from Full IQ Tests
The KBIT-2 is a screener, not a comprehensive evaluation. This distinction matters enormously for how you interpret any score it produces.
A full IQ test like the WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition) takes 60–90 minutes or longer, administered one-on-one by a licensed psychologist. It measures five broad cognitive domains — Verbal Comprehension, Visual Spatial, Fluid Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed — along with numerous subtests within each domain. The result is a richly detailed cognitive profile.
The KBIT-2 takes 15–30 minutes. It covers Verbal and Nonverbal ability only. It does not measure working memory, processing speed, or phonological awareness. It is designed explicitly to be a brief, efficient first look — a way to identify children who warrant further evaluation, not to provide the full picture that a comprehensive battery would yield.
This does not make the KBIT-2 a lesser instrument. For its intended purpose — screening large numbers of children quickly — it is well-validated and widely respected. But a KBIT-2 score is never a substitute for a full psychoeducational evaluation when one is needed.
Gifted Screening Thresholds
The most common reason children take the KBIT-2 is gifted program screening. Districts use it because it is brief, individually administered, and well-normed — making it more precise than group tests like the CogAT for one-on-one referrals.
Most school districts set their KBIT-2 cutoff for referral to full gifted evaluation between 120 and 125 on the IQ Composite. A score at or above this threshold typically triggers a referral for a comprehensive evaluation — usually a full WISC-V or Stanford-Binet 5, administered by a school psychologist or licensed clinician.
A KBIT-2 IQ Composite of 130 or above (Very Superior range) almost universally results in a full evaluation referral, and in some districts, this score alone is sufficient to qualify for gifted services, depending on state law and local policy.
Important: the KBIT-2 score is a gate to further evaluation, not a final gifted determination in most programs. Check your district's specific policy.
KBIT-2 vs. WISC-V Scores: What to Expect
Parents often ask: if my child scored 125 on the KBIT-2, will they score 125 on the WISC-V? The answer is: probably close, but not necessarily identical.
Research comparing the two instruments shows moderate to strong correlations overall, but individual children can score meaningfully differently on each. Several factors explain this:
- The WISC-V measures five factors while the KBIT-2 measures two. A child with exceptionally strong working memory or processing speed will not have that captured in the KBIT-2 score.
- Children with twice-exceptional profiles (gifted plus a learning disability such as dyslexia) often score lower on the KBIT-2 Verbal section because verbal knowledge subtests are sensitive to reading difficulties. Their WISC-V profile, which separates multiple factors, may reveal a more accurate picture of their abilities.
- English language learners may score lower on the KBIT-2 Verbal section than their actual cognitive ability warrants, because crystallized knowledge subtests are language-dependent. The Nonverbal score is more informative in these cases.
The KBIT-2 is a reliable and valid screener. But if a child's KBIT-2 score seems inconsistent with their classroom performance, teacher observations, or other data, a full evaluation is the appropriate next step.
What a Low KBIT-2 Score Means
A score in the Borderline or Extremely Low range on the KBIT-2 does not diagnose a learning disability, intellectual disability, or any other condition. The KBIT-2 is not a diagnostic instrument. It identifies children who may benefit from further evaluation — in either direction.
If your child scored lower than expected, consider:
- Whether test conditions were typical (was the child tired, anxious, ill, or rushed?)
- Whether the score conflicts with what teachers and parents observe in the child's everyday reasoning and problem-solving
- Whether a full psychoeducational evaluation would provide a more complete picture
A comprehensive evaluation — which includes the WISC-V or a similar battery, academic achievement testing, and clinical observation — is the appropriate tool for understanding any child whose profile raises questions that a brief screener cannot answer.
How to Read the Score Report
Your KBIT-2 score report will typically include the following for each score (Verbal, Nonverbal, IQ Composite):
- Standard score — the primary score on the 100-mean, 15-SD scale
- Percentile rank — how your child performed relative to peers of the same age (a percentile of 85 means your child scored higher than 85% of same-age children)
- Confidence interval — typically a 90% or 95% range around the standard score (e.g., 118–126), acknowledging that all tests have measurement error and the true score likely falls within this range
- Descriptive classification — the band label (Average, Superior, etc.)
When reading any IQ score, always look at the confidence interval alongside the point estimate. A score of 119 with a confidence interval of 114–124 overlaps with the Superior range — the true score may well be above 120.
What to Do After Getting KBIT-2 Results
If your child scored in the gifted range (typically 120+): expect a referral for a full evaluation. Prepare by asking your school psychologist what the next steps are and approximately how long the evaluation process will take. Understand that the KBIT-2 score opened the door — the full evaluation will be the basis for any placement decision.
If your child scored in the average range (90–119): this result indicates typical cognitive ability. If you believe the score underrepresents your child's actual ability, discuss your concerns with the evaluator. Ask whether a full evaluation would be appropriate, and provide any additional context (teacher observations, academic records, artwork, or other evidence of reasoning ability).
If your child scored in the below-average range (below 90): a single brief screening score should not be the endpoint. Request a meeting with your school's evaluation team to discuss whether a full psychoeducational evaluation is warranted. A comprehensive evaluation will clarify whether the KBIT-2 score accurately reflects your child's ability or whether other factors — attention, anxiety, processing differences, language background — may have affected the result.
