The CogAT is one of the most widely used gifted screening tests in the United States, but most parents encounter it for the first time with little context. The questions below are the ones our readers ask most — answered with as much specificity and honesty as we can offer.
Yes — but "study" is the wrong frame. The CogAT measures reasoning ability, not academic knowledge. You cannot prepare for it the way you'd prepare for a spelling test. What you can do is give your child deliberate exposure to the question types the test uses: verbal analogies, number sequences, and figure matrices.
These question types are learnable. Most children have never encountered a verbal analogy before their first CogAT. A child who practices 30 or 40 of them will recognize the structure instantly on test day and approach each item with a strategy rather than a guess. Research and practical experience consistently show that 4–8 weeks of structured prep leads to meaningful score improvements — typically 5–15 SAS points — especially for children who had no prior exposure to these question types. Beyond that range, gains become smaller because the test is measuring something real about underlying reasoning ability.
The CogAT uses a Standard Age Score (SAS) with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 16. A score of 100 means your child performed at the exact average for their age group nationwide. A score of 116 is one standard deviation above average — about the 84th percentile. A score of 121 is the 90th percentile.
In practical terms, "a good score" depends entirely on what you're trying to achieve. For most gifted program placements, the minimum threshold is the 90th percentile (SAS ~121). More selective programs require the 95th percentile (SAS ~125) or higher. A small number of highly competitive programs require the 97th or 98th percentile (SAS ~128–132). If your child's district hasn't published its specific cutoff, call the gifted/talented coordinator and ask directly — this information is almost always available. A score below the cutoff is not a verdict on your child's intelligence or future potential. First, request the full score report — not just the composite, but all three battery scores (Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal). Sometimes a single weak battery brings down an otherwise strong composite, and understanding where the gap is helps you target preparation if you pursue retesting.
Second, ask your district about alternative pathways. Many districts allow teacher nominations, portfolio submissions, or achievement test data to supplement a borderline CogAT score. A child at the 88th percentile might still qualify if their teacher strongly advocates and their work samples demonstrate exceptional ability. Third, remember that a child who doesn't qualify for a gifted program this year can retest in subsequent years — and a well-targeted 6–8 week prep period between attempts often makes a meaningful difference.
Most school districts allow retesting, but the waiting period and process vary significantly. The most common policy is a one-year waiting period — your child can be referred and assessed again in the following academic year's testing window. Some districts allow retesting sooner if there is documented evidence that the initial score was not representative, such as illness on test day, significant test anxiety, or a family crisis during the testing period. In such cases, a note from your child's pediatrician or a psychologist can support an early retest request.
Districts that use the CogAT Form 8 are unlikely to give the same form twice in succession, as test publishers discourage this for security reasons. If your district retests after one year, a different form or level may be administered. Preparation between attempts should focus on the question types that were weakest on the first attempt.
This is one of the most important distinctions for parents to understand. The CogAT is a group-administered cognitive abilities test — your child takes it in a classroom with their peers, timed, with a proctor reading instructions. It measures reasoning ability across three domains: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. It does not assess working memory directly, processing speed, or phonological reasoning — all components of a comprehensive IQ battery.
An IQ test like the WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children) or Stanford-Binet 5 is individually administered by a licensed psychologist in a one-on-one setting over 60–90 minutes. These tests assess a broader range of cognitive abilities, provide more clinical nuance, and are typically used for diagnosis, disability identification, or high-stakes gifted qualification. The CogAT and a clinical IQ test often yield correlated but not identical results. A child who scores at the 90th percentile on the CogAT will not necessarily score at the 90th percentile on the WISC-V, and vice versa.
The CogAT score report includes three separate battery scores — Verbal (V), Quantitative (Q), and Nonverbal (N) — in addition to the overall composite SAS. The relationship between these three scores is called the Profile Score. It describes whether your child's reasoning abilities are balanced across all three domains or whether they have a specific strength or weakness.
A profile like "V:128 / Q:115 / N:118" tells a nuanced story: strong verbal reasoning, solid quantitative and nonverbal reasoning, but verbal is the standout. Profiles matter for two reasons: (1) Some districts weight specific batteries differently — a high nonverbal score may flag a strong candidate for STEM enrichment even with a lower composite; (2) A profile with high scatter (e.g., one battery at the 98th percentile and another at the 60th) may indicate twice-exceptional characteristics — exceptional ability in some domains alongside relative weaknesses that warrant further evaluation.
Ability — specifically, reasoning ability. The CogAT is explicitly designed to minimize the advantage of prior knowledge. The Quantitative Battery, for example, does not test arithmetic facts or procedures. It tests whether a child can identify a rule in a number sequence or recognize the relationship in a number analogy. A child who doesn't know the multiplication tables can still succeed on the Quantitative Battery by reasoning about patterns.
That said, the Verbal Battery does implicitly favor children with broader vocabulary exposure. A verbal analogy question using the words "analogy" and "comparison" will be harder for a child with limited vocabulary than for a strong reader. This is one reason the test has been critiqued as culturally and socioeconomically biased — verbal reasoning is genuinely harder to separate from verbal knowledge. The Nonverbal Battery is the most knowledge-independent of the three and is often the most informative for English language learners or children from underrepresented backgrounds.
The CogAT has a Level 5/6 form designed for kindergartners and first graders (ages 5–6). Some districts administer it as early as pre-K for early gifted program identification, though this is less common. The youngest versions of the test use pictures rather than words and are administered with more verbal instruction from the proctor.
Testing very young children for gifted identification is somewhat controversial. Cognitive abilities at ages 5–6 are less stable than at ages 8–10, meaning scores can change more significantly over time. A child who doesn't test gifted at age 5 may absolutely test gifted at age 8. Most assessment researchers recommend that high-stakes gifted identification decisions be based on testing at age 7 or later, when scores are more predictive. If your district tests in kindergarten, understand that a borderline result is not determinative — retesting a year or two later is entirely appropriate.
The full CogAT battery — all three batteries (Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal) — takes approximately 90 to 100 minutes of actual testing time, not including administration setup, instructions, and rest breaks. Most schools split this across two or three sessions to reduce fatigue, particularly for younger students.
The time allocation by battery varies slightly by level, but a rough breakdown for elementary grades is: Verbal Battery ~30–35 minutes, Quantitative Battery ~25–30 minutes, Nonverbal Battery ~30–35 minutes. Some districts administer only one or two batteries rather than the full three, particularly for initial screening. If only the Nonverbal Battery is used for initial screening (common in some equity-focused districts), the test takes roughly 30 minutes. Ask your district coordinator which batteries will be administered.
Two weeks is enough time to make a meaningful difference if you focus strategically. The approach: 15–20 minutes per day, six days per week, split across all three battery types. Don't spend all your time on the section your child finds easiest — improvement there will be minimal. Instead, identify the weakest battery from a brief diagnostic, and weight your practice toward it.
In practice: spend Days 1–3 on verbal analogies exclusively. Use dinner-table conversations to introduce the structure ("dog is to animal as rose is to..."). Days 4–6: number sequences. Start with simple +2 patterns, then add alternating rules. Days 7–9: figure matrices. Draw 2×2 grids on paper and have your child complete them; graduate to 3×3 if they pick it up quickly. Days 10–12: mixed practice across all three types — 5 questions each, loosely timed. Days 13–14: rest. Do not introduce new material in the final 48 hours. Test anxiety is real and common, especially for children who understand that the test matters. If your child froze, blanked, or rushed through items without reading carefully, the resulting score may significantly underrepresent their actual ability. This is recognized in the assessment literature, and most districts have mechanisms to address it.
First, document the behavior as soon as possible — note that your child reported feeling anxious, unable to focus, or overwhelmed. If your child's teacher or the test proctor observed unusual distress, ask them to document it as well. Then contact the district's gifted coordinator and request a retest accommodation, citing test anxiety. Some districts will allow a retake sooner than the standard one-year waiting period when there is credible evidence of test interference. In the meantime, consider working with your child on low-stakes practice that separates "puzzles" from "tests" psychologically — normalizing the question types reduces the anxiety response on future attempts.
The research on this is nuanced. CogAT scores show moderate to strong correlations with academic achievement, particularly in reading comprehension and mathematics. Students who score at the 95th percentile on the CogAT do, on average, outperform students at the 50th percentile on standardized achievement tests. This is what the test is designed to predict, and it generally does.
However, the predictive validity of the CogAT weakens considerably over long time horizons and for outcomes beyond standardized test performance. Factors like motivation, self-regulation, quality of instruction, access to enriched environments, and emotional resilience are all substantial predictors of long-term academic and life outcomes — and the CogAT measures none of these. A child who scores at the 85th percentile and is intensely curious, works hard, and has strong family support will frequently outperform a child who scores at the 97th percentile but lacks these traits. Use the CogAT as one data point among many, not as a ceiling or a guarantee.
