When your child's CogAT results arrive, the number that matters most is the Standard Age Score (SAS). Unlike raw scores or grade percentiles, the SAS tells you how your child performed compared to other children of the same age nationwide. Understanding what that number means — and what it takes to qualify for gifted programs at each grade level — is the first step in figuring out next steps.
What Is the SAS Score?
The Standard Age Score is a normalized score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 16. This means that roughly 68% of all students score between 84 and 116. A score of 100 is precisely average for a child's age group. A score of 116 is one standard deviation above the mean — about the 84th percentile. A score of 132 is two standard deviations above — about the 98th percentile.
The SAS is calculated separately for each of the three batteries (Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal) and then combined into a composite SAS. Most gifted program decisions use the composite, though some districts also consider individual battery scores.
Importantly, the SAS is age-normed, not grade-normed. A kindergartner and a first grader tested on the same form will have their scores compared to different normative groups. This means a score of 120 means the same thing — 91st percentile — regardless of the grade your child is in.

What Does "Gifted" Mean on the CogAT?
There is no single universal definition of "gifted" on the CogAT, but the most commonly cited benchmarks are:
- 90th percentile (SAS ~121): The minimum threshold used by many districts for gifted program screening. At this level, a child outperforms 9 out of 10 age-matched peers nationwide.
- 95th percentile (SAS ~125): Used by more selective programs. Roughly 1 in 20 students scores here or above.
- 97th percentile (SAS ~128): A common cutoff for highly competitive programs, particularly in urban districts.
- 98th percentile (SAS ~132): Required for some of the most selective gifted placements, particularly in New York City, parts of Illinois, and nationally recognized gifted schools.
The Riverside Insights (publisher of the CogAT) does not officially define what score constitutes "gifted." That determination is made entirely at the district or state level.

- Request a score report breakdown. Ask for the full battery scores, not just the composite. If one battery was unusually low due to testing anxiety or fatigue, that context matters.
- Ask about retest policies. Many districts allow retesting after one academic year. Some allow it sooner if there is evidence the initial score was not representative (illness, test anxiety, etc.).
- Inquire about alternative pathways. Some programs accept teacher nominations, portfolio reviews, or achievement test data as supplementary evidence.
