Grades 2, 3, and 4 are the peak years for CogAT testing in the United States. Most school districts screen for gifted programs during these years, and many students encounter the CogAT for the first time. Preparing effectively means understanding not just the general format of the test, but how the test changes by grade level — because a Level 8 CogAT (Grade 2) and a Level 10 CogAT (Grade 4) feel like very different tests.
Why Grades 2–4 Are the Critical CogAT Years
Districts typically identify gifted students during elementary school because that's when enrichment programs, pull-out groups, and accelerated tracks begin. Testing windows for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade gifted identification usually happen in the fall semester (September–November), with placement for the following school year. Missing this window often means waiting another full year.
A second reason these grades matter: children in grades 2–4 are old enough to benefit meaningfully from practice, but young enough that their reasoning skills are still rapidly developing. Targeted prep in this window has the highest return.
Grade 2 CogAT: Level 8 (Ages 7–8)
CogAT Level 8 — What the Test Looks Like
Level 8 is administered to second graders (typically ages 7–8). The test uses a mix of pictures and words. Many questions still rely on visual prompts rather than reading, which means strong readers don't have a significant inherent advantage over non-readers at this level.
Verbal Battery: Sentence completion questions ask children to choose a word that best completes a sentence. Verbal analogies are presented with pictures or simple words: "Bird is to nest as bee is to ___." Verbal classification asks children to find which word doesn't belong in a group.
Quantitative Battery: Number sequences are short (typically 4–5 numbers), with simple rules like +2 or ×2. Number analogies compare two pairs: "2 : 4 :: 3 : ___." Most children at this level struggle with alternating patterns and two-rule sequences.
Nonverbal Battery: Figure matrices use 2×2 grids with one cell missing. Shapes change in one or two ways at a time (rotation, size, shading). Paper folding questions are introduced at this level, often with just one fold.
Where 7-year-olds struggle most:
- Verbal analogies — the abstract relational thinking required is genuinely new for most 7-year-olds.
- Number sequences with alternating rules (e.g., +2, −1, +2, −1).
- Paper folding — spatial visualization is still developing at this age.
Practice focus for Grade 2: Spend the most time on verbal analogies using everyday objects. Use concrete examples at the dinner table. For nonverbal, tangram puzzles and simple origami build the spatial rotation skill tested in figure matrices.
Grade 3 CogAT: Level 9/10 (Ages 8–9)
CogAT Level 9/10 — What Changes from Grade 2
By Level 9, questions shift toward reading-based formats. The verbal battery becomes heavily word-dependent, and abstract reasoning questions increase in complexity. Children who have strong reading comprehension but limited exposure to analogical reasoning may actually feel more challenged here than at Level 8.
Verbal Battery changes: Verbal analogies now use words without picture support. The relationships get more abstract — part-to-whole, cause-and-effect, synonym relationships. Example: "Grief : sorrow :: joy : ___." Classification questions include more nuanced categories (e.g., "Which of these is NOT a tool used in cooking?").
Quantitative Battery changes: Sequences now regularly include three-step rules. Number analogies may involve multiplication or division. A typical Level 9/10 number analogy: "12 : 4 :: 18 : ___" (rule: divide by 3).
Nonverbal Battery changes: Figure matrices expand to 3×3 grids. Multiple rules apply simultaneously (e.g., both rotation and shading change across rows and columns). Figure classification introduces more categories of shapes.
Where 8-year-olds struggle most:
- Abstract verbal analogies — relationships like "analogy : comparison :: metaphor : ___" are genuinely hard at this age.
- 3×3 figure matrices where two transformation rules must be tracked at once.
- Number analogies involving division (less practiced than addition).
Practice focus for Grade 3: Build vocabulary through wide reading and explicit discussion of word relationships. For math, play "what's the rule?" games with number pairs rather than drilling arithmetic. Practice 3×3 matrix puzzles — draw them on paper or use free online resources.
Grade 4 CogAT: Level 10/11 (Ages 9–10)
CogAT Level 10/11 — The Most Abstract Level for Elementary
Level 10/11 tests more demanding abstract reasoning. Sequences are longer (6–8 numbers), verbal analogies assume a broader vocabulary, and figure matrices have more complex multi-step transformations. Time pressure also becomes a more significant factor at this level.
Verbal Battery at Level 10/11: Analogies now regularly include less common vocabulary and multi-step relationships. Example: "Prologue : beginning :: epilogue : ___." Sentence completion requires understanding tone and nuance, not just grammar. Classification questions include overlapping categories that require careful elimination.
Quantitative Battery at Level 10/11: Sequences can involve square numbers, fractions, or geometric patterns. A Level 11 sequence might be: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ___. Number analogies frequently involve two operations: "3 : 10 :: 5 : ___" (rule: ×2 +4).
Nonverbal Battery at Level 10/11: Paper folding questions show three folds before punching and unfolding — significantly harder than Level 8 equivalents. Figure matrices combine three simultaneous transformation rules across 3×3 grids. Figure classification uses abstract shapes with multiple varying attributes.
Where 9-year-olds struggle most:
- Number sequences with quadratic or geometric rules.
- Paper folding with 3+ folds.
- Time management — Level 10/11 has more items per section and tighter time limits.
Practice focus for Grade 4: Introduce square numbers and basic geometric sequences (1, 2, 4, 8…) through puzzles and games. For paper folding, practice physically with actual paper before doing test questions — the tactile experience builds the mental model. Work on pacing: your child should practice skipping and returning to hard questions rather than getting stuck.
Skills to Practice at Any Grade
Regardless of the specific level your child is testing at, three core skills underpin every CogAT question:
- Verbal analogies: Identify the relationship in the first pair, then apply it. Practice daily with household objects, books, and vocabulary words from school.
- Number patterns: Learn to ask "what's the rule?" instead of "what's the next number?" The rule-first approach transfers to the quantitative battery directly.
- Spatial reasoning: Tangrams, jigsaw puzzles, building blocks, origami, and pattern-block activities all build the spatial rotation and visualization skills the nonverbal battery tests.
4-Week Mini Prep Plan (Any Grade)
Week 1 — Verbal Analogies
10–15 minutes per day. Introduce three relationship types: category (dog:animal), function (scissors:cut), and part-to-whole (finger:hand). Practice out loud, not on paper. Ask your child to explain the relationship before answering.
Week 2 — Number Patterns
10–15 minutes per day. Start with single-rule sequences, then add alternating patterns. Play "secret rule" — one person thinks of a rule, the other guesses by offering numbers and receiving yes/no feedback.
Week 3 — Spatial Reasoning
10–15 minutes per day. Use tangrams (physical or app-based) for the first half the week. Shift to paper folding practice — fold actual paper, punch holes, predict before unfolding. Draw 2×2 or 3×3 figure matrices together.
Week 4 — Mixed Practice and Pacing
Mix all three question types daily. Use a timer for 5-minute mini-sets. Practice skipping hard questions and returning to them. End the week with a relaxed review rather than intensive drilling. Celebrate the effort.

- Don't drill rote memorization. The CogAT does not test facts. Memorizing vocabulary lists or math formulas won't move the needle — reasoning practice will.
- Don't practice for more than 20–25 minutes at a time. Short, consistent sessions outperform long, infrequent ones for children in this age range.
- Don't focus exclusively on the battery your child finds easiest. The composite SAS weights all three batteries equally. A weak nonverbal battery will drag down an otherwise strong score.
- Don't convey anxiety about outcomes. Children who understand that there are consequences for a low score often freeze during the actual test. Frame prep as "learning interesting puzzles."
- Don't skip the night before. Adequate sleep is the single highest-leverage intervention on test day. Practice ends two days before the test.
