When your child's WPPSI-IV score report arrives, it can look intimidating — pages of numbers, acronyms, and percentiles. This guide walks through every score type you'll see, what it actually means, and how to use it to make informed decisions for your child.

The Foundation: Mean 100, Standard Deviation 15

Like all Wechsler scales, the WPPSI-IV uses a standardized score system built around a mean (average) of 100 and a standard deviation (SD) of 15. This means roughly 68% of all children score between 85 and 115 (one SD either side of the mean), and about 96% score between 70 and 130 (two SDs). When you see any Wechsler score — FSIQ, index scores, or subtest scaled scores — you're always comparing your child to a nationally representative sample of same-age peers.

The Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) is the single summary score that combines all primary subtests. It is the score most gifted programs and school psychologists lead with.

A few things to notice here: the "Average" band is wide — scores from 90 to 109 all fall in it, spanning the 25th through 73rd percentile. A score of 100 is literally the median. And the distance between a score of 115 (High Average) and 130 (Gifted threshold) is exactly one standard deviation — genuinely meaningful, but a range that many children cross when retested a year or two later.

The Two Age Bands: 2:6–3:11 vs. 4:0–7:7

The WPPSI-IV is actually two different batteries joined by a common name. The two versions are administered differently and produce different score types.

Ages 2:6–3:11 (younger band): A shorter battery of five core subtests takes approximately 30 minutes. Rather than a full suite of index scores, this age band produces a Verbal Intelligence Quotient (VIQ) from receptive vocabulary and picture naming subtests, and a Performance Intelligence Quotient (PIQ) from block design, object assembly, and picture memory. The FSIQ is derived from VIQ and PIQ. Because the brain is developing so rapidly before age 4, these scores have less predictive validity than scores obtained at school age.

Ages 4:0–7:7 (older band): A fuller battery of up to 15 subtests (5 core, 5 primary, 5 ancillary) taking 45–60 minutes. This version produces a full set of Primary Index Scores in addition to the FSIQ. Most gifted program assessments and developmental evaluations use this version.

Primary Index Scales (Ages 4:0–7:7)

For children in the 4:0–7:7 band, the score report will include five Primary Index Scores alongside the FSIQ. Each has the same mean-100, SD-15 scale as the FSIQ. Here is what each measures:

Why FSIQ and Index Scores May Differ Significantly

One of the most common questions parents ask is: "My child's FSIQ is 118, but her Verbal Comprehension is 132 and her Processing Speed is 95 — which score is 'right'?" The answer is that both are accurate descriptions of different aspects of your child's cognitive functioning.

Very young children often show dramatic variability across index scores. A 4-year-old who has had extensive book-reading and conversation may have VCI scores well into the Superior range while showing average Processing Speed because pencil-and-paper graphomotor tasks are not yet fully developed in preschoolers. This is neurologically normal, not a sign of a problem.

When index scores vary by more than about 23 points from one another, psychologists typically note that the FSIQ is a less accurate summary of the child's overall ability than the index scores individually. The report may flag this as "significant variability" or an "uneven cognitive profile." In such cases, looking at the individual index scores tells a richer story than the FSIQ alone.

Gifted Thresholds: What Score Is Enough?

There is no single universal gifted threshold — it depends on the program and sometimes the school district. However, the most common benchmarks are:

What Low Scores Mean at Ages 4–5

If your child's scores fell below what you expected, several things are worth knowing before drawing conclusions. First, scores below 85 at ages 4–5 predict future academic difficulty less reliably than scores at age 7+. Young children are highly susceptible to situational factors: a bad nap, anxiety about the testing situation, an unfamiliar adult, or simply a bad day can depress scores by 10–15 points or more.

Second, the younger the child, the larger the standard error of measurement (SEM) — the built-in statistical uncertainty in any test score. At age 4, the FSIQ SEM is typically around 4–5 points, meaning the "true" score could easily be 5 points higher or lower than what was reported.

Third, if scores suggest developmental concerns (scores below 70), an evaluation by a developmental pediatrician or pediatric neuropsychologist, combined with additional measures beyond the WPPSI alone, is the appropriate next step — not a single test score acting as a label.

Confidence Intervals: The Score Is a Range

Every WPPSI-IV score report will include confidence intervals — typically reported at the 90% or 95% level. These look like this: FSIQ 122 (116–128, 90% CI). This means the psychologist is 90% confident your child's "true" score lies between 116 and 128. The single number (122) is the best estimate, but the range is what you should hold in mind when thinking about program eligibility, follow-up testing, or comparing with other assessments.

Confidence intervals matter enormously at cutoff boundaries. A child who scores FSIQ 128 with a confidence interval of 122–134 genuinely may have a "true" score above 130 — and a well-trained evaluator will note this possibility in the report.

How to Read the Full Psychologist's Report

The written report that accompanies the scores typically runs 10–20 pages. Here is how to navigate it:

1My child's FSIQ is 128. Does that qualify as gifted?
It depends on the program. Most gifted programs use 130 as the cutoff, so a score of 128 would not qualify on its own. However, the 90% confidence interval on a score of 128 typically extends to 133–134, and some evaluators will note this in their report. Also check whether any individual index scores (like VCI or FRI) reached 130+, since some programs accept a qualifying index in lieu of the full FSIQ.
2Can my 3-year-old's WPPSI score predict her intelligence at age 10?
Only loosely. Research on IQ stability shows that scores obtained before age 5 correlate with later scores at roughly 0.5–0.6 (moderate correlation), compared to 0.8–0.9 for scores obtained at ages 8–10. This means a 3-year-old's WPPSI score provides useful information about current development but should not be treated as a fixed or permanent measure. Scores commonly shift 10–20 points — in either direction — between ages 3 and 8.
3What does it mean if my child's Processing Speed score is much lower than his other scores?
Processing Speed measures how quickly and accurately a child copies symbols or identifies matching images — tasks that require both graphomotor control and visual scanning speed. In young children, particularly those under 6, lower PSI scores relative to verbal or reasoning scores are extremely common and often reflect developmental timing rather than a true deficit. The PSI also has the largest SEM of the five primary indexes. If PSI remains significantly lower than other scores at age 7–8, it may be worth exploring further with an occupational therapist or neuropsychologist.
4We received a score of 135. What should we do next?
First, share the full report with your child's school. Most gifted coordinators or school psychologists will want to review the complete evaluation, not just the FSIQ. Next, inquire about district gifted programs, magnet school testing, and any private gifted programs in your area. A score of 135 (99th percentile) is well above most gifted thresholds. You may also want to read the recommendations section of the psychologist's report carefully — it will often include specific suggestions for enrichment and educational placement appropriate to your child's profile.
5Is there a difference between how boys and girls score on the WPPSI-IV?
The WPPSI-IV normative sample was stratified by sex, age, parental education, and race/ethnicity to be nationally representative. The norming process accounts for any average differences between demographic groups, so the scores you receive are already age- and sex-referenced. Girls and boys show slightly different developmental timing on certain tasks (girls often show earlier verbal development; boys show slightly different visual-spatial trajectories on average), but the norms are designed to produce comparable FSIQ distributions across sex within each age band.
