The SHSAT composite score is the single number that determines whether your child gets an offer to one of NYC's nine specialized high schools — and which school. Understanding how that score is built, and what scores have historically been needed, gives families a concrete target to work toward.
How the SHSAT Is Scored
The SHSAT has 114 questions: 57 in the English Language Arts (ELA) section and 57 in the Math section. Every correct answer earns one raw score point. There is no penalty for wrong answers — this means students should fill in every single bubble, even when guessing.
The raw score (0–114) is converted through a process called equating into a composite scaled score that ranges from 200 to 800. Equating adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test forms administered in different years, so a 550 in 2023 represents roughly the same level of performance as a 550 in 2021. The NYC Department of Education does not publish the exact conversion table.
ELA vs. Math Section Breakdown
The ELA section contains two question types:
- Revising/Editing (~20 questions): grammar, mechanics, sentence improvement, paragraph organization
- Reading Comprehension (~37 questions): 5–6 passages with multiple-choice questions on inference, vocabulary in context, and author's purpose
The Math section covers arithmetic, number properties, algebra, word problems, geometry, probability, and statistics — all at or below the 8th-grade curriculum level. No trigonometry, no calculus, no advanced algebra 2.
Students are given 180 minutes for the full test and may allocate time between sections however they choose.
What the Score Report Includes
After results are released (typically in March), families receive a score report showing the composite scaled score, separate raw scores for ELA and Math, and the list of schools in their child's order of preference. The report confirms which offer, if any, was extended. The NYC DOE does not publish individual school cutoff scores — this information is released only to families receiving offers at each school.

Note: NYC Lab High School for Collaborative Studies does not use the SHSAT for admission — it uses a separate portfolio and interview process. It is often listed alongside the SHSAT schools but has a different admissions pathway entirely.
How Cutoffs Are Determined Each Year
Cutoffs are not set in advance by the DOE. Instead, they emerge from the admissions process: students rank their preferred schools, the DOE matches the highest-scoring students to their top-ranked school first, and the cutoff becomes the score of the last student admitted to fill each school's available seats. A school with fewer seats will tend to have a higher cutoff; a school with more seats (like Brooklyn Tech, which admits roughly 1,700 students per year) has a lower cutoff.
This also means cutoffs shift year to year. If more students compete, or if a top-ranked school has fewer openings, cutoffs rise. If the applicant pool is smaller or a school expands, cutoffs may fall slightly.
Cutoff Trends: Rising Over Time
Across the past decade, SHSAT cutoff scores have trended upward at most schools. In the early 2010s, community estimates suggested Stuyvesant cutoffs in the low 500s. By 2020–2025, estimates consistently cluster in the 560–585 range. Increased participation in prep programs, growth in SHSAT tutoring, and a larger applicant pool all contribute to upward pressure on cutoffs over time.
This trend makes early and consistent preparation more important than ever. A student who begins prep in 6th grade has a meaningful advantage over one who begins in October of 8th grade.
How to Set a Score Target for Your Child
A useful framework: identify your child's first-choice school, add 20–30 points to the estimated cutoff as a buffer, and work backward from the required composite to a raw score. Given the equating conversion, a composite score of around 500 typically corresponds to answering roughly 75–80 raw questions correctly out of 114. A score of 560 may require 90+ correct answers.
- Practice under timed conditions to simulate test-day pacing
- Track raw scores across full practice tests to monitor improvement
- List multiple schools at different cutoff levels — this is one of the most important strategic decisions families make
- The Discovery Program (for income-eligible students who score just below a cutoff) can expand options for qualifying families
