The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) is one of the oldest gifted screening tools in American education — and one of the least understood by parents. Most families encounter it right before their child's first high-stakes assessment, often with little preparation time. These are the questions that come up most often.
The OLSAT measures abstract thinking and reasoning ability, not academic knowledge. It has two main sections: Verbal and Nonverbal. The Verbal section includes following directions, aural reasoning (questions read aloud), arithmetic reasoning (pattern-based, not computation), logical selection, word and letter matrix, verbal analogies, and verbal classification. The Nonverbal section covers figural analogies, pattern matrix, figural series, and number series.
Crucially, the OLSAT does not test reading fluency, spelling, or subject-matter knowledge. A child who reads below grade level can still score well on the OLSAT's nonverbal section if their spatial and abstract reasoning ability is strong.
Neither type of learner has a systematic advantage across the full test, because the OLSAT is roughly balanced between verbal and nonverbal content. That said, the aural reasoning questions at younger levels (Levels A and B) require careful listening and multi-step direction-following, which can be harder for children who struggle to track spoken instructions without visual support.
Strong visual-spatial reasoners typically excel on the Nonverbal section, which involves completing pattern matrices and figural series — tasks that reward spatial reasoning. If your child tends to think in pictures and spatial patterns, the Nonverbal section often plays to their strengths.
OLSAT scores are converted from raw scores to a School Ability Index (SAI) — mean 100, standard deviation 16 — and then to stanines on a scale of 1–9. In general terms: Stanine 1–3 is below average, Stanine 4–6 is average, Stanine 7–9 is above average. Most gifted programs require Stanine 7 at minimum; selective programs require Stanine 8 or 9.
In New York City specifically, gifted program eligibility uses a composite percentile combining OLSAT and NNAT scores. District gifted programs typically require the 90th percentile composite or above. Citywide gifted programs (the most selective) have historically required the 97th percentile or higher. The OLSAT has been in use since the 1970s and has been revised multiple times, most recently as the OLSAT-8. While the test has a long track record, critics note that the norming data is dated relative to newer tests like the CogAT Form 8, and the question formats have changed less than the research on cognitive assessment has evolved since the last major revision.
Despite its age, the OLSAT continues to show reasonable predictive validity for academic ability in school settings — meaning students who score high on the OLSAT do, on average, perform well academically. For NYC's specific purpose (initial gifted screening at ages 4–5), it remains a practical tool because it can be administered to large groups quickly. Whether it's the best possible tool for that purpose is a separate debate.

It produces a detailed profile score showing relative strengths across three domains. Geographically: the CogAT is used in school districts across all 50 states. The OLSAT is concentrated in NYC, Nassau County (Long Island), and parts of New Jersey and the broader Northeast. Yes — OLSAT Level A is specifically designed for children ages 4½ to 5½ (pre-K and kindergarten applicants). At this level, the entire test is administered orally: the examiner reads every question aloud, and children respond by pointing to pictures or circling answers rather than reading or writing. The questions use simple, colorful pictures and are designed to be accessible to young children who have never taken a standardized test.
Whether high-stakes gifted identification at age 4 is developmentally appropriate is a separate question. Cognitive ability scores at this age are less stable and less predictive than scores obtained at age 7 or older. A child who doesn't score gifted at 4 may test differently at 6. Most assessment researchers recommend treating early scores as one data point rather than a definitive measure of potential.
The OLSAT Level A (for kindergarten-age children) takes approximately 60–75 minutes in total, typically split into two sessions of roughly 30–35 minutes each to manage fatigue. In NYC, the OLSAT and NNAT are often administered on the same testing day, making the total session approximately 90 minutes with a break between tests.
Preparation tip: make sure your child has eaten, has used the restroom, and has had a good night's sleep before testing. Five-year-olds who are hungry, tired, or anxious will have a much harder time maintaining focus for the duration.
Parents typically receive a score report showing the SAI (School Ability Index), stanine, and percentile equivalent — but not the raw item-level data. In NYC, the score report also shows the NNAT score and the composite percentile used for gifted program placement.
If you want to understand which question types your child struggled with, you can request an appeal review through your district office. In NYC, the appeal process allows parents to request a rescoring or have the test readministered under certain circumstances. The deadline for appeals is usually within a few weeks of score release — check your district's website for current timelines.
Test anxiety is particularly common in young children who understand that the test is important but don't have the emotional regulation skills to manage that pressure. Signs include freezing on questions, rushing through items without reading them, crying, or refusing to engage. If any of these occurred, document it immediately — note the date, describe the behavior, and if possible get a statement from the examiner or proctor.
Contact your district coordinator and ask about retest eligibility under circumstances of documented test interference. The most effective long-term strategy is to normalize the question types through practice so that on future test attempts, the format feels familiar and low-stakes. The more "puzzles" your child has done at home, the less the test environment itself will trigger anxiety.
Primarily, yes — the OLSAT's main use is identifying students for gifted and advanced academic programs. Some districts also use it as a general school ability indicator to inform classroom placement decisions or to flag students for additional evaluation.
The OLSAT is not used for clinical purposes: it cannot diagnose learning disabilities, ADHD, or twice-exceptionality. It is not a substitute for a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation (like the WISC-V or Stanford-Binet V) when a clinical diagnosis or IEP determination is needed.
