The NNAT comes up fast for most parents — a notice from the district, a testing date weeks away, and suddenly a flood of questions. This FAQ collects the 10 questions we hear most often and answers each one as specifically as the evidence allows.
The NNAT measures nonverbal reasoning ability — specifically, the ability to solve novel visual pattern problems without using language, reading, or prior mathematical knowledge. Every question on the test is a picture-based puzzle involving geometric shapes.
The test's designer, Jack Naglieri, built the NNAT around the theory of general reasoning ability as expressed through visual-spatial thinking. The four question types — Pattern Completion, Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning, and Spatial Visualization — all require the child to notice a rule or relationship in a visual display and apply it to find a missing element.
What the NNAT does not measure: vocabulary, reading comprehension, arithmetic, knowledge of facts, or language proficiency in any language. A child who speaks no English can, in principle, take the NNAT with no language disadvantage compared to a native English speaker. This is by design — the test is intended to identify reasoning ability independently of educational opportunity and language background.
The two tests measure different things, so direct difficulty comparisons are somewhat misleading. That said, here is a practical comparison:
- The CogAT is longer — approximately 2.5–3 hours across 9 subtests versus 30 minutes for the NNAT. Sheer stamina is a bigger challenge on the CogAT.
- The CogAT covers more ground — verbal analogies, number series, and figure matrices all appear. Children with verbal or quantitative strengths have more ways to perform well.
- The NNAT is harder per question for some children because it is purely abstract. On the CogAT's Verbal Battery, a child can sometimes reason from words. On the NNAT, there are no words to fall back on — every answer comes purely from visual logic.
- For English Language Learners and spatial thinkers, the NNAT is often the easier test, because it removes language from the equation entirely.
The bottom line: a spatially strong child who dislikes verbal reasoning will likely find the NNAT friendlier. A verbally strong child who dislikes abstract patterns will likely find the CogAT Verbal Battery easier than the NNAT. Neither test is universally harder.
NNAT scores are reported as a Naglieri Ability Index (NAI) — a standard score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 — and as a corresponding percentile rank. The score that matters for gifted program eligibility depends entirely on your district.
As a national benchmark:
- NAI 125 / 95th percentile — This is the most common gifted threshold nationally. It means your child scored higher than 95% of same-age peers.
- NAI 128–130 / 97th–98th percentile — Required by many competitive urban programs. NYC Citywide G&T programs have historically required composite scores in this range.
- NAI 132+ / 99th percentile — Top-tier competitive programs. In some years, NYC Citywide seats have effectively required 99th percentile composite scores due to demand exceeding supply.
Always look up your specific district's published cutoff score before drawing conclusions from your child's results. Some districts set the bar at the 90th percentile; others at the 97th. The same NAI score of 122 could mean "qualified" in one district and "not qualified" in another.

Not inherently, but familiarity with visual pattern tasks does matter. The NNAT measures reasoning ability, but it also rewards familiarity with the format of the questions. A child who has never seen a matrix puzzle (a grid where shapes follow rules) may spend valuable time figuring out what the question is asking, rather than actually solving it.
Think of it like reading comprehension: a child who reads widely has stronger comprehension in part because they have read many different text formats. A child who has done many visual puzzles — tangrams, pattern blocks, matrix exercises — will approach NNAT questions with a natural instinct for what to look for.
If your child has had very little exposure to this type of thinking, starting early (8–12 weeks out) with hands-on spatial activities and gradually introducing structured NNAT-style questions is the most effective approach. The goal is not to teach "tricks" — it is to build genuine familiarity so the question format does not create unnecessary friction on test day.
Yes — with an important clarification. You cannot memorize answers to NNAT questions the way you might memorize multiplication tables. Every question is a novel pattern that must be reasoned through in the moment.
What does improve with practice:
- Question-format fluency. Knowing what a Serial Reasoning question is asking — that there are rules across rows and down columns of a 3×3 grid — means your child can immediately focus on finding the rule instead of first figuring out the format.
- Visual pattern recognition speed. Regular exposure to matrix puzzles and pattern sequences trains the brain to quickly notice relevant attributes (color, size, shape, orientation) and track how they change. This is a learnable skill.
- Spatial reasoning ability. Mental rotation, shape completion, and spatial folding are skills that genuinely improve with practice. Activities like tangrams, jigsaw puzzles, and folding exercises build the relevant mental machinery.
- Test comfort. Children who have practiced under mild time pressure and with a familiar question format are less anxious on test day, and less anxiety generally means better performance.
Research on cognitive skill development in children consistently shows that spatial reasoning improves with targeted practice. The key is consistent, moderate practice (10–15 minutes per day over 8–12 weeks) rather than intensive cramming.
The NNAT is a 30-minute test with 48 questions. This is consistent across all grade levels (Levels A through G), though the difficulty of questions increases with each level.
In school settings, the actual testing session may take slightly longer when you include the time for distributing materials, the examiner reading instructions, and collecting answer sheets — typically the full block is about 45–50 minutes. The 30 minutes refers to the actual working time on the questions.
For young children (kindergarten and Grade 1), 30 minutes is a manageable but real sustained-attention demand. For older children, the time pressure is more significant relative to question difficulty — upper-level NNAT questions (Levels E–G) require careful visual analysis, and 30 minutes for 48 questions leaves roughly 37 seconds per question.
Practice under mild time awareness (without rigid stopwatch pressure) helps children develop a natural pace. The biggest time risk is spending too long on a very hard question. Teaching children to skip and return, rather than getting stuck, is valuable test-taking strategy for any timed assessment.
The NNAT covers children from kindergarten through Grade 12 (approximately ages 5–18), organized into seven levels:
- Level A — Kindergarten (~age 5)
- Level B — Grade 1 (~age 6)
- Level C — Grade 2 (~age 7)
- Level D — Grade 3 (~age 8)
- Level E — Grades 4–5 (~ages 9–10)
- Level F — Grades 6–7 (~ages 11–12)
- Level G — Grades 8–12 (~ages 13–18)
In practice, most gifted screening use of the NNAT is concentrated at the kindergarten and Grade 1 levels (Levels A and B), because many gifted programs in the United States identify children for placement entering kindergarten or first grade. However, some districts screen at multiple grade levels, and the NNAT is used for gifted identification all the way through middle school.
The score is always age-normed — your child is compared to other children of the same age (within a 3-month band), not to children in the same grade.
No. The NNAT uses a simple number-correct scoring formula with no penalty for wrong answers or unanswered questions. The raw score is simply the count of questions answered correctly.
This has a clear practical implication: your child should always provide an answer for every question, even if they are not sure. A random guess on a 5-option question has a 20% chance of being correct. Leaving the question blank guarantees 0 chance of earning that point.
Make sure your child understands this before the test. Young children sometimes believe leaving a question blank is "safe" because it will not hurt them — but on a no-penalty test, there is no such thing as a safe blank. Every unanswered question is a missed opportunity.
A useful approach to practice: if your child cannot figure out the answer after working the problem, tell them to pick whichever answer "looks most right" and move on. Over 48 questions, even educated guessing on the harder items can add meaningful points.
This pattern — strong nonverbal reasoning with average (or below-average) verbal and quantitative scores — is called a nonverbal strength profile, and it is meaningful.
Possible explanations include:
- Language background. If English is not the primary language at home, verbal batteries (CogAT Verbal) will naturally underperform relative to nonverbal tasks, even for a very capable reasoner.
- Learning profile. Some children with dyslexia, language processing differences, or ADHD show dramatically higher nonverbal than verbal reasoning scores. The high nonverbal score is the more accurate reflection of their reasoning ability.
- Genuine cognitive style. Some children are simply visual-spatial thinkers by nature. They may go on to excel in mathematics, engineering, architecture, or the visual arts — fields where spatial and nonverbal reasoning is more important than verbal fluency.
- Measurement variation. Both tests have standard errors of measurement. In some cases, the difference reflects normal variability in test scores rather than a deep cognitive pattern. A single test administration is never a definitive portrait.
For gifted program eligibility, what matters is the score(s) your district uses. If your district uses only the NNAT, a high NAI qualifies your child regardless of CogAT results. If the program uses a CogAT composite, the lower verbal and quantitative scores will pull the composite down. Discuss with your child's school psychologist or gifted coordinator if you believe the CogAT scores do not reflect your child's true ability.
Score turnaround time varies significantly by district and testing context. Common timelines:
- School-based universal screening (when the NNAT is given to all children in a grade): results are typically returned to the school within 2–4 weeks of the testing date. Schools then communicate results to parents, which can add another week or two.
- NYC G&T testing: Results are typically released in a batch in spring — often March or April — several months after the January–February testing window. The NYC DOE releases all scores at once via the DOE website rather than mailing individual score reports.
- Private testing arrangements (where a child is individually tested by a psychologist): Results are typically available within 1–2 weeks of the testing appointment, as part of a written psychoeducational report.
Your score report will typically include: the raw score (number correct), the Naglieri Ability Index (NAI) standard score, and the national percentile rank. Some reports also include a local percentile rank (compared to children in your district rather than nationally).
If you need results for a specific program deadline (such as a private school gifted program with an application deadline), confirm the turnaround time with the test administrator before scheduling the test. Do not assume you will receive scores faster than the typical timeline.
